NAF-DMH-HZDalby, Wendland & Co., P.C., is pleased to announce accountants Nathan (“Nate”) A. Fyock, CPA, ABV, and Donna M. Hardy, CPA, CVA, have attained certified business valuation credentials. Fyock has been awarded the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) credential by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Hardy received the Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) designation by the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA). Both the AICPA and NACVA have varying stringent certification requirements and include continuing education courses to retain certification.

Business valuations are most commonly required in conjunction with:

  • Purchase or sale of a business including mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs,
    liquidations, and bankruptcy
  • Succession planning
  • Buy/Sell agreements
  • Charitable contributions
  • Estate and gift tax requirements
  • Ownership interests issued as compensation to executives
  • Allocation of purchase price for income tax purposes
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs)
  • Marital dissolution
  • Stockholder disputes

In the litigation arena, valuations are often necessary in situations of business disruption, dissenting shareholder actions, divorce, and partner disputes.

While the credentials are similar for services provided, they have different experience and qualification requirements.

The ABV Credential is granted to qualified CPAs with considerable professional experience in business valuation.

Fyock’s credential requirements included passing a rigorous exam, demonstrating significant business experience in the area of financial forensics and valuation, as well as completing a minimum of 75 hours of life-long learning and education activities in the area of valuation. The ABV Credential is granted exclusively to CPAs who are members in good standing of the AICPA which binds them to the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct.  CPAs who have earned the ABV Credential must be recertified every three years to maintain their credential.

CVA designation is an indication to the professional community that Hardy has met the NACVA’s strict standards of professionalism, expertise, objectivity, and integrity in the field of business valuation, litigation support, and related consulting disciplines. Hardy’s NACVA’s CVA designation is the only valuation credential accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Requirements to earn the CVA designation include holding an active CPA license, meeting NACVA’s experience threshold, completing NACVA’s five-day training program, successfully completing the NACVA’s comprehensive five-hour examination, and submitting and passing an extensive detailed sample case study.

With these credentials, Fyock and Hardy bring great expertise and a vital service to businesses and professionals by providing accurate value determination through careful analysis, understanding the business, and selecting appropriate methodology.
